The Human Body - Pedro Moura Pinheiro

Another little note: I’m still in the hospital, but my friendly co-conspirators have been (as usual) great friends, and allowed me to chose or chosen themselves themes that I can fulfill from here! Thanks!

A close-up of my wife’s right eye. The setting sun was projecting a beautiful light into the room. I just sharpened the center a bit more than the edges, and reduced the overall yellow saturation. The strange shadow seen to the right of the center of the eye is the contact lens, which I didn’t think was worth cloning out. It was taken with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 in macro mode.

On the next day, the same kind of light. My wife’s chin and lips. I just changed the yellow saturation a bit. The black background is the result of the contrast of the direct sun on my wife’s face and the background just getting reflected light - it’s no Photoshop trick. Also taken with my trusty fact totum Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, which has revealed itself a very nice camera when you learn how to trick the automatic modes.

ET phone home

My and my wife’s index fingers touching tip to tip, just like ET phoning home, minus the glow! :-) The background is the white room ceiling, it didn’t come out perfect, I had to fill it in a bit so it wouldn’t distract the viewer from the main focus. I also sharpened the center a bit more than the edges, to increase the effect. Also taken with the TZ3.

For this one I asked my wife Gabriela to hold a bedsheet between my hand and the window. I compensated the exposure to -2 f-stops. On Photoshop, I removed some of the kinks that the sheet had that distracted from the firm outline of the hand, and also applied a smart filter to enhance the light behind the hand to create a subtle halo effect. I hope you don’t think I cheated to much on this one :-) . It was also taken with the TZ3.

My and Gabriela’s hands with the fingers interlaced. If I hadn’t been stuck indoors for the past month, my hand would be much darker than hers! :-D B/W, levels, and some sharpening in Photoshop, also taken with the TZ3 over a pillow.

Our daughter Carolina’s hand on my wife’s (I wanted another position, but she wasn’t in that “posing” mood :-D ). As the top of picture reached the end of the pillow, I had to fill it in on the top right, it would lose the simple feeling of the picture if I hadn’t. It’s amazing how much she has grown in the past year and half!! Also taken with the ever more trusty TZ3.

I would have liked to explore bigger parts of the body (in a kind of abstract nude way), but it’s difficult in my current settings. Even so I liked the results, within the limits, and I’m enjoying working with the TZ3 a lot, it just needs manual modes and a flash hotshoe to be the perfect pocket camera.

  1. Congrats on another assignment made under harsh conditions!

    My comments:

    1. Excellent shot and fantastic detail! Who needs a DSLR anyway? :-)

    2. Again kudos for the detail! I don’t like the shot as a whole because of the body part chosen… i would prefer the mouth alone, instead of the chin. But besides that it is a very good shot.

    3. Very cool shot with a nice effect. Too bad the left finger doesn’t have nail polish… eheheh seriously it is an excellent shot and goes very well with the week’s theme.

    4. Very good shot, even with the distracting hair :-) the background is very very good.

    5. Another excellent shot where I wouldn’t dare change a thing. It shows harmony, contrast (black vs clean nails), symmetry and the soft bedsheets on the botton make it just perfect.

    6. This one, although good, is the one I like least because of the lack of contrast between the two hands. But the harmony that it shows is still quite nice.

    good job!

  2. Good work! My favorite is the last one, it gives a sense of tenderness and protection towards the little child.
Next on my top 5 it’s the eye of G, but i would clone out the lenses shadow, it distracts the viewer from the beautiful colors of the eye to that particular place.
The shin and mouth of G leave me speechless, great shot!
The hand in front of the sheet is in fourth place, great contrast, and just love the detail on the sheet.
The other two, they feel like common places (one of them Spielberg’s fault), but the one with all fingers present it’s great, the ET phone home one minimalist approach in a form of a straight line it lacks momentum… i guess :)
Congratulations for the results, for pictures taken at the hospital they all make it to greatness!

  3. Just perfect.
Despites the fact you’re on an hospital bed, you’ve managed to pull out this assignment just great.
The first one is great, and I like the contact lens effect, since it shows the perfection on the details, you always have.
My favorite one is the last one also, it is hard do get the kids doing what we want right ? ;)

Also like very much on the chin one, would love to know how to do the black background effect. You will have to do a workshop on that later.

    Overall, PERFECT work.

  4. Dear dear :)
I just loved all these photos, yours & the others! You are all great artists.
I’m specially touched for your sweet sensibility :)
    Congratulations, just Perfect!
    Kiss & love, Paula
