Speed - Nuno Correia
speed of light
To take this one I’ve zoomed out while the shutter was open, giving the sense of high speed.

Just One
It seams there are 2 bump cars, but it’s only one, they take a s-turn and this was the result.

Saint on the move
A religious procession taking place at S. Martinho do Porto, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. People using red tunic, candles an a well lit saint, taking it from one chapel to the main church.

Slow Prayer
A slow religious procession, slow prayers.

I tried to avoid a conservative approach, as an example of this are the ones of a religious procession that I’ve attended last thursday.

Congrats on one more theme completed! Here are my comments:
1. I like this interpretation of speed. The shot looks good to me, although I think it could be improved with a bit of practice, maybe using a tripod to get straight lines on top and a sharper image of the cars.
2. Very nice shot! Speed is there all the way! Simple, creative and spot on!
3. I don’t like this shot: it doesn’t send ’speed’ up our spines, there is no detail to see, it looks like a messy pic that didn’t go quite well…
4. This one I think it’s a little bit better because it definitely shows movement, even though a quite slow one and not fast like the word ’speed’ would imply. Technically I think there’s too much stuff in the middle and that confuses the viewer. Maybe a shorter exposure with a wider aperture? Of course low light situations are tough….

1st. I used a tripod, the lack of straight lines was caused by the length of my zoom lenses which traveled from 300mm to 28mm.
3rd and 4th My interpretation of speed for this assignment was th most scientific one, any object traveling from A to B have some speed. I love long exposures, and this photos are my first outdoor experience, in this photo I’ve tried to demonstrate how slow the portuguese people faces their religious believes, almost in a suffering posture. It’s funny seeing the different ways to celebrate religion, for example Gospel…

I understand your point of view and you are right. Like my uncle used to tell me, if you look at a photograph by itself, you can’t tell whether it is a good or a bad shot. You need to take into consideration what the photographer was aiming to get when he took the shot, and only then will you be able to tell whether it is a good or a bad shot.
With this limitation in mind, I am trying to keep my comments as objective and technical as I can, limited obviously by my photographic skills and also by my humble interpretation of the pictures. I am trying to be harsh in the sense that I want to express my opinion as a viewer and I want to locate every single detail that I think could be improved.
Basically I look at all the shots in this site and try to locate and point out the flaws…
Since the goal here is to practice and learn, I think this is the best way. And believe me, I am learing a lot too!
