Reflections - Pedro Moura Pinheiro

wheels and more wheels

Taken from my hospital room’s balcony with the trusty Panasonic TZ3. It’s the reflection of another car on the body of a Citröen C4. I pulled up very slightly the darker gamut of tones, so the reflection could be seen more clearly.

Hello mom, I’m on TV !! :-D Actually this is the reflection I get from the small wall mounted TV in my hospital room, so it’s a kind of self-portrait in my current environment. You can see me holding the camera on the table, so I could get a sharp one second exposure. Tip: with cameras or lenses that have any kind of image stabilization, turn it off for shots on tripods or other stable surfaces.

After talking so much about the TZ3, here you can see the camera’s self portrait. Being a digital camera, I thought the right “mirror” for the job would be another electronic “eye”, my MacBook Pro’s iSight integrated camera. I used the included Photo Booth software, pulling the window up to the highest point possible in the screen.

Using a small mirror, I placed it in my left hand, extended my arm as far as it would go, and took the shot using my right hand with the camera near the right side of my head. I used some bunched up tissue paper in front of the flash so some light would be redirected to the side illuminating my face. I changed the camera’s focus mode to a spot focus mode the TZ3 has, and looked at the camera through the mirror (meaning the camera would be seeing me). After a few failed takes, this was the result!

My Nokia E61’s screen reflecting my MacBook Pro’s screen, which was showing a picture of the very same E61 on a previous photoassignment.net’s assignment - therefore the chosen title for the photo! :-) Taken with the TZ3 also.

Also taken from my room’s balcony, the back of the same Citröen C4 from the first photo, reflecting the parking lot, the ambulances, the entrance to the emergency ward, and the hospital in general, with the double chevron logo and the back window wiper seeming to float on the reflection. Also shot with the TZ3.

I had taken the option not to expose too much the fact that I’m in a hospital, in a “I don’t want to be reminded of this period in years to come” kind of way. It was a silly option, which I fortunately changed my mind on - bad times, good times, all should be remembered. All the pictures were taken on Monday night and Tuesday, I was feeling creative!

  1. Congrats on another assignment completed! My comments follow:

    1. Very cool shot! It seems like you are seeing the right wheel through a transparent car!

    2. Simple but effective. A self-portrait to for when you edit your memories.

    3. Again creativity at its best! Love it!

    6. Very good shining car you got there! nice work!

  2. “my fifteen minutes of fame”… such a sad photo. Makes my heart beat fast. The though of someone I know in a hospital bed evokes lots of emotion.
