Freedom

This one was taken on the “Fonte da Telha” beach in Almada, used again, my loyal, flash and flash triggers to counter light the sun light, giving this effect.

For those who know Diogo, know wow hard it is to get him in any photo, so for him I had to use the candid approach. Used the same light technique.

Well the name isn’t the best one, but it will have to do. She was holding the remote flash, pointing to her, the final effect was a little overexposed on the left side, but, still pretty acceptable.

Set Up ?

2007_27_jr_4.jpg

Although this one incredibly looks like a set up, it is not. The flash was pointing to Diogo at almost 90º from the camera, Eva was more in the back, so all the light stayed in Diogo. Since the sun was already week, the flash light is stronger. Made some smart sharpening on PS.

Also, the same as the previous one, the flash was on the right being hold by katy which was running like a crazy to catch those two. PS only for some sharpening.

Altough it is very, very overexposed on the right, I just had to put this one :). The look on his face is just the same that the t-shirt says. And thats Diogo.

Once again, this wasn’t a easy one for me, since I’ve never had done portraits before. I’ve tried to use a different approach, also I’ve worked a little more on PS for this assignment.

On this assignment I had a very bad experience, because on the shooting session on the beach, Diogo with is hands full of sand grabbed the lens, the feeling was, “ARRRRGGGGGG”, but everything turned out ok, made my buy, finally, the lens filter in the next day :).

Thank you for Katy’s patience once again, and for the lovely kids she gave me for shooting.

  1. João,
I really liked the results. My only opinion is that you could have tried some closer up shots against the setting sun, but that’s just my opinion. I think the goals we set ourselves for this website are being met wonderfully!

  2. Well done! For first portraits you managed to pull out great photos. The techniques you’ve learned and still learning at the Strobist it’s aiding you pm getting nice photos, but you could try not overexposing so much, as you can see in the 2 first photos and on the 5th. The last one, Diogo has a nice expression, but the blast of the flash isn’t so great, I suggest that you use a sheet of paper over the flash to diffuse the light. The same applies Katy’s photo. And now some tips on framing portraits, when you take a photo of person, you should crop above the joints (knees, elbows) to avoid strange proportions of the body, on the “Carefull” one the feet should appear, but, only who tried to take photos of kids know how difficult that is, congratulations for your effort and nerve to do so! :)
The “Setup?” in my opinion is the least successfull, the shadow of Diogo’s hand appears in Eva’s dress, you could photoshop it, but they are kids… they don’t stop and get bored quickly, you had the guts to portrait kids… man… you’re a hero! :D
    Keep up the good job!

  3. Congrats on another completed mission. Comments follow as usual:

    1. Funny picture. Don’t like the fact that Eva’s eyes are not visible. Would have loved to see her look directly into the lens…

    2. A very nice shot… why are the corners darkened?

    3. Good lighting and detail on the hair, too bad for the wind which made the hair cover the face…

    4. It does look like cut and paste work… The shot is so so in my opinion and doesn’t quite fit the portrait theme for me. Maybe for a kids theme it would be ok

    5. Good shot, again reminding me of a kids theme. The light could be softer, there are several spots overexposed. Good line of strength in the back.

    6. Good portrait with too much light from the side. Gotta put those flashes further away or with softeners on the front.

    Good work though!

  4. […] taken the balancing light one that I liked the most. I’ve done this kind of thecnique with my portrait assignment almost a year ago, and I guess I prefer the old ones […]
