Night - Pedro Moura Pinheiro
liberty is a long path

Avenida da Liberda (Liberty Avenue) in Lisbon is one of the main arteries of the city, connecting the baixa (downtown) area to the center. This photo was shot from the bottom of the avenue, on one of the two central sidewalks, looking north over the traditional portuguese light/dark cobblestone pavement.

Vasco da Gama bridge, as seen from the Lisbon side, the longest in Europe, which crosses the widest part of the river Tejo (Tagus), called the mar da palha (the hay sea), which is actually a pretty large delta basin area (which narrows again to two kilometers at the narrowest place before meeting the Atlantic ocean).

watching star trek on cable
Canon EOS 5D + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
28 seconds - f/5.0 - ISO 50
One of the cable cars that runs alongside the river in the Parque das Nações area of northeast Lisbon, the site of the 1998 World Exhibition. They stop running after the sunset, and there was no wind, so I was able to capture this almost vertical, 28 second shot with the stars in the background. I also had fun naming this one!

lighting up the darkness
Canon EOS 5D + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
Frame 1: 40 seconds - f/5.0 - ISO 50
Frame 2: 8 seconds - f/5.0 - ISO 50
The Vasco da Gama tower, with the Vasco da Gama bridge in the background. This image is the sum of two different exposures with the exact same framing, joined with layers and masks on Photoshop, the darkest one providing the details in the highlights, the other providing the overall effect of the sky blazing with the public illumination of Lisbon.

love into the night
Canon EOS 5D + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
14 seconds - f/13.0 - ISO 100
Right after sunset, this 14 second exposure captured the river Tejo (Tagus) with the Vasco da Gama bridge in the background, and a couple enjoying the location, the nice weather, and each other.

the three of us
Canon EOS 5D + Canon EF 85mm f/1.8
1/500 of a second - f/1.8 - ISO 3200
My 20 month old daughter Carolina against an outdoor stone covered wall. The light is provided by several public illumination lamps facing it from a low angle, thus the two shadows. She was fascinated by her own two shadows!

All pictures except the first were taken near my apartment - I’m recovering well, but I still don’t feel up to walking around old Lisbon in search of grittier and more texture filled angles. Anyway, I enjoyed what I learned this week of handling the Canon EOS 5D out on the street, it doesn’t have the steep learning curve I was expecting. I hope you like the results!

I’vve just loved all of them! very beautiful
liberty is a long pass & the three of us are defenetly my favourites
Kiss & love, Paula

My comments this week:
1. A very good night shot, I like the idea. Would be even better with someone walking up the vertical line.
2. Excellent night shot: I love the line that brings you along the shot, the stillness in the water and the effect of the lights in the bridge. Great!
3. Again a great shot. I would have tried to move the camera a little to the left but it still works very well with the two lines in the shot.
4. A good shot and the color works nicely. The tree is blocking our view though.
5. A great shot! I love it. Still I would prefer a B&W shot and with just the right half of the pic, making a 5×10 shot instead.
6. Love this one. Great model and great lighting effect. Well done!
