One of those portable mini refrigerators.  The 420EX is inside, and the 550EX is on the back, with a small softbox to spread the light around.

Sony DSC-U40 used as a off camera flash
30 seconds - f/4.6 - ISO 100

I used an interesting technique on this one: the TZ3 has a “Starry night” mode, which permits exposures of up to 60 seconds.  I put it on a tripod on a darkened room, opened the shutter, and then shot the bird (excuse me the pun…) with the little Sony U40 as an external flash.

In Sintra, the sun already low in the sky, I turned down the exposure compensation on the TZ3 to capture the lit parts with detail, leaving everything else in shadow.

The advantage of high-speed sync is that you can take pictures like this one (in this case, a self portrait) in a room with normal lights, and the camera settings allow for the flash  to be the only light registered in the shot.

At first I didn’t get the objective of the assignment, but after a few chats with Nuno and some internet browsing, I think I got the picture (sorry for the pun, again… :-) ). I’m trying to shoot in RAW and to have a better color workflow, let’s see if I stick with it in the future.

One Response to “Low-key - Pedro Moura Pinheiro”

  1. Congrats on another mission accomplished. My comments folow:

    1. I love this one! Great use of light!

    2. Great shot with great light control. I think it would work even better rotating the camera 90 degrees and trying to frame the whole duck in the shot.

    3. This one I like so so… not as good as the previous shots although it shows good use of natural light.

    4. Good shot. I would prefer that the camera was at eye level, pointing straight instead of looking up.

    Nice work Pedro.
