What’s it all about

This photo blog was born out of the frustration with photo procrastination between three friends. The best way to improve at anything is to practice, a lot. So we made a pact - to complete a photographic assignment every week, no matter what, on everything and anything. This isn’t a competition - there are no judges, no scores. The goal is to become better photographers, and share ideas while we’re doing it. We hope you enjoy our work! You can find the rules here.

Coffee on milk

Canon EOS400D + Canon 50mm MKII + Canon 430ex + Remote strobe
1/200 of a second - f/4.0 - ISO200

Same thechnique used to photograph the wheel assignment, but this time with a cup of cofee on milk ;). For this one I’ve placed the top strobe at 1/2 of power.

Week 32 - Coffee

The idea is to illustrate Coffee the lovely drink that make us stay awake. Can be in any kind of form, liquid, solid, in grain, can also be a photo of coffee being made, drank, etc.

Due on Monday the 11th of August, at noon GMT+1.

Wheel - Joao Rechena

Firetruck

2008_31_jr_1.jpg

Canon EOS400D + Canon 50mm MKII + Canon 430ex + Remote Strobe
1/200 of a second - f/4 - ISO200

The setup for this photo can be seen here Setup, nothing complicated, the car is placed in a translucent shelf so I’ve placed the 430ex on the bottom at 1/32 and the other remote strobe on the bottom shelf at 1/5 of power, to make the top light. Then with the perfect 50mm I’ve made this photo.

This is a model firefighters car from a very special person. The car is all made of bended steel and the “wheel” detail is just perfect. It’s good to take some photos with the 400D again.

Week 31 - Wheel

“Reinventing the wheel” is the expression used when people try to come up with a new solution for a problem that already has the perfect solution.  The wheel is one of the most ubiquitous inventions in human civilization, present throughout our daily lives in a myriad of functions.

Due on Monday the 4th of August, at noon GMT+1.

Bugs - Pedro Moura Pinheiro

Canon EOS 40D + Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3
1/1600 of a second - f/7.1 - ISO 1250

Instead of a macro approach to the subject matter at hand, I tried a longer distance approach.  Sitting on a stool with the camera and the big lens on a tripod, I patiently waited for the bees to take flight and test my response time on the trigger - as you can imagine, I have lots of photos with just flowers, without any bees on the frame.

Week 30 - Bugs

This week it’s dedicated to macro photography.. or not! Take some picture of one or more bugs… watch out, some bugs can sting you! ;)

Due on Monday the 28th of July, at noon GMT+1.

Summer - Pedro Moura Pinheiro

Big Beach

Big Beach

Canon PowerShot G9
1/1250 of a second - f/4 - ISO 80

This is an overview of “Praia Grande”, literally translated as “Big Beach”, from a point only accessible either on foot of by ATV.  This is a panorama from 3 different exposures, I tried to show the size of the beach with the little specks (people!) for scale.

Cabana

2008_28_29_jr_1.jpg

Canon Powershot G9
1/250 of a second - f/4.0 - ISO80

Taken with my new G9 on Apulia Beach in the north of Portugal. The beach was full of those little cabanas to rent.

I took the advice of Pedro and instead of upgrading my 400D to a 40D I’ve bought the wonderful G9 which is always on my pocket. I’ve lost many god photo opportunities in the past, but not anymore :)

Week 28 & 29 - Summer

The idea is to ilustrate te concept of Summer, can be a beach, hot, anything.  The reason the Week is 28 & 29 is since we didn’t had the time to post last week’s assignment, for this one we will have to take 2 photos.

Due on Monday the 21st of July, at noon GMT+1.

HDR - Pedro Moura Pinheiro

Canon PowerShot G9

The problem with HDR is that people tend to overdo it, giving images a dreamy look which has become a bit too common in the past two or three years.  The main advantage of HDR is the ability to create an image with as much dynamic range as the human eye can see, making photos in certain conditions possible, enabling details to be resolved both on the highlights as in the shadows.

Week 27 - HDR

High dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures (the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows. in Wikipedia

Due on Monday the 7th of July, at noon GMT+1.
